The GCFL's have successfully reared their nestlings in our squirrel nest box and the babies flew today, much to our relief. It has been been great fun watching them. They were skittish at first, but then grew accustomed to our presence. The box is only a few yards from our house, so I was concerned that they would abandon their nest building. But they didn't. She incubated the eggs for 14 days and then it was another 16 days that they fed them in the nest box. It was interesting to hear the nestlings in side the box making the same Wheep! Wheep! that the parents make. I haven't been able to see them since they left the box but they are near it. I'll try and get some pictures.of the babies..
Since they only have one brood a year, I'm hoping they return next year.
Here are some pictures I got during the nesting process.. http://lyndablair.smugmug.com/Other/2011/15366186_JusoP#1293498704_VzJNqVS
Thanks to Brenda Tekin and Zig for the info and advice:)
