The GCFL's have successfully reared their nestlings in our squirrel nest box
and the babies flew today, much to our relief. It has been been great fun
watching them. They were skittish at first, but then grew accustomed to our
presence. The box is only a few yards from our house, so I was concerned
that they would abandon their nest building. But they didn't. She incubated
the eggs for 14 days and then it was another 16 days that they fed them in
the nest box. It was interesting to hear the nestlings in side the box
making the same Wheep! Wheep! that the parents make. I haven't been able to
see them since they left the box but they are near it. I'll try and get some
pictures.of the babies..
Since they only have one brood a year, I'm hoping they return next year.
