This morning David Hughes and I walked a few miles of the Washington Ditch
road. Early on a Wild Turkey walked ahead of us but didn't display or gobble.
The highlight was hearing our target, a FOY LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, right on
schedule. We also had a singing COMMON YELLOWTHROAT which was also FOY for
me. There were numbers of Rusty Blackbirds that were heard but never seen so I
don't know how many there were. We heard swan(s) overhead, but since we never
saw them, it's unknown how many there were. The morning's mammal list included
a White-tailed Deer, several squirrels, and my first Dismal Swamp coyote.
Spring Peepers were calling and a single Southern Leopard Frog was heard. The
butterflies picked up nicely on our return trip: Mourning Cloak (6), Eastern
Comma (2), Falcate Orangetip (4), Zebra Swallowtail (1), Questionmark (2),
Orange Sulfur (2).
My next walk will be on Tuesday, March 20, leaving the Jericho Ditch Lane
parking lot at 7:30am. No reservation is needed, just show up. I hope to see
you then. The complete birdlist for this morning's walk is behow.
