Following is the count from Sunday's weekly bird walk at Great Falls
National Park, which identified approximately 28 species and included 6
participants. Birds were in abundance despite the single-digit temperature (3
degrees, actually) at the start of the walk. Although there were gobs of
Canada Geese, relatively few species of ducks were sighted -- Common
Mergansers, Black Ducks, and Mallards only -- likely due to the amount of ice
on the river. And even the ice was singing.
The walk meets at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, rain or shine, in front of the
snack bar/concession stand of the Great Falls Park visitors' center; it does
not take place, though, during electrical storms, heavy snows, or when the
trails are icy. All birders are welcome!
