Following is the count from Sunday's weekly bird walk at Great Falls National
Park, which identified approximately 26 species and included 12 participants.
Particularly noteworthy were the sightings of 1) a Merlin on a snag upriver; 2)
a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at one of the falls overlooks; and 3) the Four Flickers
Flying Forward Furiously. There also was the rare flash of insight that the
Vireo olivaceus must have earned its common name of "Red-eyed Vireo" because of
its penchant for migratory flight at night.
This walk meets at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, rain or shine, in front of the
snack bar/concession stand of the Great Falls National Park Visitors' center;
it does not take place, though, during electrical storms, heavy snows, or when
the trails are icy. All those with an interest in the natural world - beginning
and experienced birders alike - please join us.
