Our group of 15 had a relatively slow-going morning with 35 species.
Highlights included several
pairs of pileated woodpeckers, a pine warbler, several phoebes and the return
of tree swallows. Buffleheads,
ring-necked ducks and common mergansers were notably missing. Both adult
eagles were seen either on or
near the nest. One birder peeked in an eye level hole in a tree to find a
snake peering back at her! The
woods ar beginning to come alive with spice bush, bluebells, toothwort, spring
beauties, dutchmen's
breeches, vinca, creeping charley, wild ginger and cress blooming.
All birders are welcome to join the Sunday walk which meets at 8:00am. We move
from the parking lot
via the visitors center courtyard (our designated start point) to overlook 2
-- the birds determine
exactly where we are at 8:00am so a flock in the parking lot will delay our
progress. -- Marshall Rawson, McLean, VA
