Taking a break from running errands this afternoon I stopped by
Greenfield for awhile. About 2/3 of the pond was covered with ice. Still there
were
decent numbers of waterfowl. Best bird was an imm. Tundra Swan keeping company
with 8 Canada Geese. (there were 120 Canadas at nearby Daleville Pond). Also at
Greenfield there was a female Canvasback, 3 American Wigeon, 100+ Mallards, 1
Black Duck, 20 Gadwall, and a dozen or so Green-winged Teal. Also present was
a Kingfisher, a Flicker, several Song Sparrows and 1 Swamp Sparrow. Most
encouraging was a Bobwhite calling, letting me know there are still a few of
them
hanging on in this part of the world.
After I checked Daleville Pond it was getting late as I drove past Bobby
and Andy Bigg's house and counted a "herd" of 31 White-tailed Deer heading for
their yard, including 3 bucks!
