Observers:
Weather:
Partly to mostly cloudy, winds shifting from ENE to WNW 3-8 mph, high of 68
degrees.
Raptor Observations:
Morning started off smartly the first few hours with over 1000 BW, then
trailed off. Despite the great clouds it was a struggle all day pulling
the birds in from a distance and flying high, with the majority to the SE
of the ridge as yesterday. I was tempted to leave earlier than I did, but
the memory of yesterday's late flight after 4 PM EST kept me hanging on. I
was rewarded with a modest kettle of 85 birds that materialized out of the
blue sky that prevailed at the end of the day. The stream tacked towards
the ridge to pass nearly overhead, the only group of birds over the last
two days to do so. The light of the lowering sun reflecting off of them
was a treat. Hourly BW totals EST: 9 (457), 10 (639), 11 (30), 12 (68), 1
(89), 2 (3), 3 (11), 4 (103), 5 (0). Ashton Ridge just to our west in
Bedford Co. had comparable numbers for the day, although counting was
curtailed there late in the day with an earlier loss of cloud cover
(www.hawkcount.org).
Non-raptor Observations:
Monarch - 14
Dragonfly - maybe a few dozen
Swallow sp. - 4
N. Flicker - 1
RB Grosbeak - 1
Predictions:
No coverage before Thursday.
