Total observation time: 5.75 hours
Official Counter: Mike Purdy
Observers: Matt Hafner
Visitors:
Barry Kinzie and Tad Finnell came up with hopes of seeing the Solitaire.
Unfortunately no one saw it besides Matt.
Weather:
Classic November day, mostly overcast, cool temps. 48-51 F. Steady breeze
out of the East. A fair amount of haze in the valleys.
Raptor Observations:
Very little movement of raptors. Only counted 2 Red-tails and a Northern
Harrier. A few local Red-tails were noted as well as a Sharp-shinned flying
North. A few TVs and BVs were up.
Non-raptor Observations:
Matt Hafner arrived at 9:15, got out of his car and immediately spotted a
TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE perched in a tree only 20 ft. in front of him. He
managed to get a few photos before it took off and headed SW following the
ridge. This bird represents a new species for Virginia! Congratulations
Matt!
Other birds at Harvey's today include a Pine Sisken flying over, a small
flock of Eastern Bluebirds, American Goldfinches, several White-breasted
Nuthatches, Titmice, Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wren, Downy and Pileated
Woodpeckers, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Cedar
Waxwings, and Ravens.
Predictions:
A little warmer with light SW winds.
