Visitors:
The hawk watch was overflowing this morning with visitors & regulars in
anticipation of Barry's annual & famous sausage gravy & biscuits & hawks of
course, they were not disappointed in either & an addition to Barry, Allen
was doing some cooking & making coffee (country ham,,,,yumm). Way too many
to list but a good time was or should have been had by all.
Thanks to all that helped the counters spot today's hawks.
Weather:
A mix of sun & clouds all watch with NE winds at a 2 most of watch with
cool temps up into the afternoon hrs.
Raptor Observations:
Another WOW!! day at the watch. With the inclement weather the previous 2
days, the anticipation of a good flight was high & that is what the count
became. 10 species in total for the day. Hawks were observed rising from
the west with others streaming in low forming nice kettles then streaming
out. Kettles and streams flew through on both sides of the watch and
straight overhead, some close, some way out & up. A large stream of 800+
came over filled the sky as far as the eye could see at one point. The last
hawks were 2 NH
BW by hr 8-9 (2), 9-10 (275), 10-11 (952), 11-12 (1,455) 12-1 (527), 1-2
(1035), 2-3 (138), 3-4 (57), 4-5 (10), 5-5:15 (0)
Good numbers of SS, AK, BE & OS
AEBE @ 11:30, 11:40, 2@ 13:01, & 15:50
Imm BE @ 11:15, 13:03 & 17:21
The previous season high record of 15,398 was shattered with today's
multitude of hawks.
Non-raptor Observations:
37 Monarchs, 23 DF's, lots of Blue Jays & some warblers moved through with
apprx: 30 Cedar Wax Wings at the end of watch
Predictions:
No Gravy, no biscuits, a lot less people, hawks???
