Observation start time: 11:30:00
Observation end time: 17:30:00
Total observation time: 6 hours
Official Counter: Gene Sattler
Observers: Lee & Nena Morgan
Visitors:
Lee and Nena Morgan were there for the first hour and a half and enjoyed
some lively action, including two of the eagles.
Weather:
Partly cloudy with nice clouds all day, WNW changing to ENE 3-8 mph, high
of 71 degrees.
Raptor Observations:
Hourly count of Broadwings in EST: 11:30-12 (227), 21-1 (3), 1-2 (106), 2-3
(663), 3-4 (45), 4-5 (1880), 5-5:30 (0). During both big hours birds were
streaming by on the southeast side of the ridge at a moderate distance from
the ridge and fairly high, barely naked eye when closest to ridge even late
in the day. In the 2 PM EST hour they all passed together in two kettles,
and in the 5 PM hour they passed in five kettles over the course of about
15 minutes. Two of the Bald Eagles were adults and two immatures.
Non-raptor Observations:
Monarchs - 66
NonMonarches - 5
Dragonflies - decent numbers but too busy to count
Great Blue Heron - four travelling together passed distant to the
southeast 3:04 EST, and seemed to be paralleling the ridge.
Swallow sp. - 8
Predictions:
A late day flight tends to bode well for the morrow. Don't have any
coverage lined up for Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday at this point.
