Dear VA-bird,
I finally made it to Harrison Rd. to look for the Short-eared Owls. I arrived
around 5:30 and saw Fred Atwood and his birding club. They had just found a
Lapland Longspur and they pointed it out. It was a great start! On the small
pond, I found a nice collection of waterfowl including: Tundra Swan,
Ring-necked Duck, Gadwall, Bufflehead and Lesser Scaup. While I was scoping
them, an American Pipit flew overhead. I had great views of the Short-eared
Owls sitting, flying and hunting. Fred told me about some American Woodcocks
on Mount Eccentric road, so I went by there on the way home. I parked at a
power station near a small creek. There were at least 4 woodcocks vocalizing
and one flew over my head. It was a nice evening.
Good birding!
