Visitors:
Thanks to John and Judy stopping in in the afternoon to add some observers
and also Cynthia Baroody who came along to keep Roger in line. A couple
from Arkansas stopped and chatted with us and said their daughter and
son-in-law lived in Blue Ridge and might be interested in joining us at the
watch. Any additional observers are welcome. Several others stopped and
inquired about our activity. Parkway traffic was fairly heavy ahead of the
holiday weekend. Several hikers came through the overlook.
Weather:
Temperature at the beginning of watch was 71 F and rose to the mid 80s by
the end of watch. Winds were primarily from the northeast most of the day
and in the 3-4 mph range. Cloud cover was only about 10% at the start but
quickly increased and reached 75-80% by midday. Lower humidity made the
watch a lot more pleasant than my previous visit on Wednesday.
Raptor Observations:
First bird was an adult bald eagle that came in fairly low over the knob
and directly above the parking lot at 9:10. Another ABE came by low across
the western valley providing a good look at 12:15. Lots of TVs through the
day.
Non-raptor Observations:
We had about a dozen monarchs and a few visits by the local ravens
throughout the day.
Predictions:
Looks like temperatures about 10 degrees cooler coupled with even lower
humidity and winds from the NE and NW.
