Visitors:
Lee Jarrett and Dave Berjoui spent most of the day with us and we had
several sightseers inquire about our activity including a couple for
Massachusetts that chatted for a while. Had an AT hiker from KY that was
section hiking from the James River to Pearisburg stop early and chat with
me. He reported seeing streams of monarchs going by when he was in the
Apple Orchard Mt. section of the trail.
Weather:
All times are "bird" time. Started out very pleasant with a strong
northwest wind between 5-7 mph and temp around 22c. Virtually cloudless
sky became 100% cloud cover by end of watch when a rain shower chased us
off the mountain at 1:30. Visibility was good most of the day with the far
ridges visible but a bit hazy.
Raptor Observations:
1st bird was a Cooper's at 8:32 and there was 1 immature bald eagle on the
day at 11:11.
Non-raptor Observations:
Nearly 300 blue jays, a couple of flickers and more than 100 monarch
butterflies were seen today.
Predictions:
Small chance of rain with temps looking to be in mid to upper 70 with wind
from the south.
