Official Counter: David Brunstetter
Observers: Bill James
Visitors:
Several weekend or day hikers were seen going both directions on the trail
today. Laura Neal stopped by for a short while to help. Sorry we couldn't
find her more birds. Mike Hoffman, an ex ornithology teacher, and his wife
stopped to chat. A lawyer from Alabama ran North on the trail, but came
back a little slower going South. Said he had already made a loop of 15
miles. Bill James came and pitched in in the afternoon.
Weather:
Crystal clear day (visibility of 5) throughout with temps from 38F-47F. No
clouds, but several contrails stuck around for extended periods of time.
Winds were primarily SE to E from 1-3. Winds started decreasing toward the
end of the day.
Raptor Observations:
Most birds were seen to the E of the Knob with the exception of the
Red-shouldered hawk, a sharp-shinned, and the immature bald eagle seen at
11:25a. The other immature bald eagle was seen earlier at 10:45a. No
raptors were seen in the last 2 hours of the watch.
Non-raptor Observations:
A rather noisy nuthatch kept me company till the raptors started flying.
Predictions:
Winds turn to the NW, come in a bit stronger and colder. Could bring some
big birds.
