Visitors:
Thanks to Tim and Sue for coming up mid afternoon and providing some great
spots of large kettles far out in the west valley and to Bob for using his
scope to get counts on those same birds. Our count definitely increased
greatly due to them. Also thanks to Don Aldridge, Phillip Ferguson and to
Ron and Thelma Kirkpatrick who came over from Blacksburg and spent a good
portion of the day with us. The Links from Chesterfield County also spent
a couple of hours with us as well as two ladies whose names I failed to get
(sorry). And hopefully we'll have a new, regular hawk watcher in Matt
Conner from Roanoke who stopped by and watched/chatted with us.
Weather:
Beautiful day on the mountain. Started a bit chilly at 20c but warmed to a
comfortable 28 with low humidity. Winds were a steady 2 beaufort but
varied in direction until the last couple of hours when it dropped to 1 and
then 0. Visibility was about as good as it gets, a solid 5 all day.
Raptor Observations:
All times, eastern standard time: First bird was a sharp shined at 9:30.
Adult bald eagles at 9:51, 9:52, 12:04 (X2), 12:08, 1:41, 2:35, 3:05 (X4)
and 3:20. Immature bald eagles at 3:13, 3:30, 4:00 and 4:05. Juvenile
bald eagles at 3:50, 3:52, 4:05.
Non-raptor Observations:
Lots of blue jays, swifts and quite a few monarchs observed. Parkway
traffic was fairly heavy and several groups of 2-4 AT hikers came through.
Predictions:
Looks like more of the same weather wise, hopefully more of the same count
wise.
