A noisy flock of about 12 birds showed up in my yard this afternoon, which I've
since determined are Helmeted Guinea Fowl. I have no idea where they came from
or why they might be walking through my neighborhood. I recall that several
years ago, there was some discussion about releasing Guinea Fowl at Manassas
Battlefield to control ticks, but I don't know if that happened (Manassas
Battlefield is about ten miles from my house). Perhaps a nearby farm raises
these and they are escapees (I don't know if Guinea Fowl are raised as domestic
livestock like chickens or ducks). Interesting encounter (I do hope thy ate a
few ticks while passing through). Any thoughts on why they might be around
would be appreciated.
