If you’ve never seen black-crowned night herons (babies and adults) up close,
this is a
perfect time to do it – at the National Zoo! They’ve been migrating there to
nest for decades and the zoo is banding
more of them this year. Right now the newly
fledged birds are starting to join their
parents at the zoo’s daily 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. feedings. (They feed them so the
birds won’t scarf down
all the caged birds’ food.) Some of the birds will land inches from you. If
