Please help find the rest of the nests in Highland County.Currently we
have identified three active Bald Eagle nests here, but based on
sighting data collected since January 2006, there are at least four more
pairs of adult Bald Eagles regularly perching in particular places
during the breeding season and we'd like to find thosenests too.
These pairs perch:
_East side of US 220 south of Monterey 5.4 miles over the Jackson River.
_(Map area 5)
This pair is affectionately called "Ferdinand & Isabella" by the
landowner. He says they have perched there at least 20 years and about
four years ago he noticed Isabella showed up with a younger Ferdinand.
He said it's not the first time, but the other time Ferdinand returned
with a younger Isabella. The landowner and a neighbor both report seeing
the birds flying across the road west, but they don't report it unless I
ask or they happen to see me and by then they don't remember exactly
when and that's why I'm asking for your help to stakeout this pair.
During this time of year, only one is likely to be perched in that spot.
_East side of 220 south of Monterey about 9**miles (Map area 6)_
This pair perches in trees on the hill east of the Jackson River behind
the trout pools across from Turner Lane. They are occasionally reported
on the ground near the trout pools. If you pull off into Turner Lane, a
dirt driveway, you can drive a short distance uphill and get a great view.

Besides the adult pair that perches here regularly, in 2006 & 2007 I
regularly saw ved two younger BAEA, perched over the river a short
distance north where the river is farther from the road.
_NE corner of VA 640& US 84 junction_(recent discovery)
People have reported a pair regularly in this spot and I assumed it was
the pair north on nest # HI-08-02 in meadow. Then l Val Kitchens and NVBC
reported seeing this pair 2/20/11 perched and the other pair in the nest
at nearly the same time... not very likely the pair flew faster than the
cars & jumped into the nest before the birders got there.
