Curiosity got the better of me so my husband and I agreed on a
spur-of-the-moment trip yesterday morning to Hite Hollow Rd. (Fire Road 82)
in south western Augusta County.
This was primarily to check out the area for a potential birding spot.
Given the lateness of the morning I really wasn't expecting much bird
activity. I was proven wrong!
Anyone looking for directions can easily go to Google Maps and type in Hite
Hollow Road, Augusta Co, VA! This site is also included in Vic Laubach's
birding sites. Links have been posted in several of his messages.
By 11 a.m. we were heading up the mountain and bird activity continued to
increase. Highlights along the approximately 15 mile stretch included:
Wood Thrush - at least 3 heard singing (one observed)
Veery - one heard with its "veer" note
Yellow-throated Vireo
Ovenbird - many heard along the route
Worm-eating Warbler - many heard along the route
Chestnut-sided Warbler - several
Black-throated Green Warbler - one active songster
Louisiana Waterthrush
American Redstart
Yellow-rumped Warbler - at least 3
Black-and-White Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler - SURPRISE of the day! An adult male
carrying food!
Scarlet Tanager - at least four actively singing
Acadian Flycatcher
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Single bird flew up from road, landing
in tree next to vehicle. I slowly backed up to confirm it was a
Yellow-billed.)
