Hey all, Elisa and I made it out to Hog Island WMA from late morning to late
afternoon today, 8/23/15. We missed some shorebirds that had been reported
earlier in the month, most notably Piping Plover and Stilt Sandpiper, but we
stayed pretty close to Hog Island Road and were still able to see a nice
variety of shorebirds and other stuff. Shorebird highlight was a Willet mixed
in with peeps and yellowlegs in the northernmost impoundment just west of Hog
Island Road.
We were impressed with the number of Tricolored Herons out there, our
conservative estimate was 9, they seemed to be all over the place in the
impoundments. We also had 7 Snowy Egrets.
In addition to a bunch of Mallards we had 1 Am. Black Duck, 6 Am. Green-winged
Teal, 2 Ruddy Ducks, 10 Wood Ducks, and 5 Blue-winged Teal.
In Isle of Wight Co. we stopped at a small pond in a farm field off SR 10 just
no. of Wrenns Mill Rd. that was loaded with Semipalmated Sandpipers and a
handful of Lesser Yellowlegs. We also had 2 Pectoral Sandpipers here, a
species we had missed at Hog Island WMA. Best,
