The Honaker Redbud Festival was held this past weekend in Russell County, VA.
The Russell County Bird Club led a bird and wildflower walk on Saturday the
18th. There were 20 participants who enjoyed a beautiful day for a nature walk.
The bird numbers were lower than usual but we did manage to tally 36 species.
Bird highlights included several Yellow-throated Warblers, a Yellow throated
Vireo, Eastern Phoebe, Pine Siskin and an Eastern Towhee that serenaded us
from a perch at the top of a tall cedar. One of our first time participants,
Jessica Duty, found and correctly identified a tail feather from a Northern
(Yellow-shafted) Flicker. This year the Redbuds were in full bloom and the
wildflowers were a wonder. I have included photos of birds and wildflowers
