Ruby-throat hummingbird activity in the yard (Reston, Northern VA) has
picked up considerably the past few days. Yesterday (Sunday) was especially
busy. I kept putting out more feeders (up to 8 now) to see if more feeders
would attract more hummers and the answer appears to be a definite yes,
especially with respect to the front and back yards. I added one feeder on
the upper deck of the house and was surprised to see that it immediately
attracted two hummers who kept at it most of the day. The other feeders
stayed busy as well, so it APPEARS that adding feeders at this time of year
does indeed attract more hummers. I cannot make the same claim for the
spring, as I put out a lot of feeders only to see limited improvement in my
spring hummer numbers. Still, that is an improvement over past years when I
only had occasional spring/early summer hummers.
