Two birders constituted the Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Huntley
Meadows this morning. While cold and some wind, the conditions were not as
bad as earlier in the week. There was some open water in the wetland,
filled by Canada Geese with 3 Hooded Mergansers and a few Mallards.
Sparrows were few, but the highlight of the morning was a Fox Sparrow that
flew up out of a group of White-throated Sparrows and perched over the path
for excellent views and some digiscoping. We also had great looks at a
Barred Owl on the path back toward the visitor center and a Hermit Thrush on
the ground at the feeders.
