VA BIRDers,
Ah, yes!; I woke up and the clouds were gone and sunshine streamed in the
window. So, I hightailed it to Huntley Meadows (the west side, back door if
you will) for 2.5 hours. After work, I stopped off on the east side of pond
and watched the sun set behind cloudy skies (I did not venture up Barnyard
Run) - another 2 hour investment. Best species of the day was a toss up -
Marsh Wren or Lincoln's Sparrow. I sort of like Lincoln's only because they
are so hard to find in spring, but seeing a Marsh Wren in the cattails near
the tower at Huntley is a relatively rare event. Another unusual bird was
Warbling Vireo - I will have to check, but I think I have only encountered
this bird once or twice previously at the park. Also pleasant to find many
Solitary Sandpipers and a couple of Least Sandpipers; some Common Snipe are
still around. A good, solid Blue Jay flight in the morning was noted. A
good mix of warblers and other neotrops were also encountered. And finding a
White-crowned mixed in with a bunch of White-throats was nice. Lots of
misses, but then that's the way it is at the end of April! Here's the data
from today's (interrupted) birding.
