The light rain didn't deter 10 birders from this morning's Huntley Meadows
Monday Morning Birdwalk. We spotted 49 species, with many of the favorite
Huntley summer birds back among us: Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Acadian Flycatchers,
Great Crested flycatchers, White-eyed Vireos, Red-eyed Vireos, and Blue-grey
Gnatcatchers have all come home. Two Virginia Rails were heard, but we didn't
hear or see the Soras or American Bitterns that have been reported at Huntley
over the past week or two. Surprise sighting of the day was a Bantam Rooster
scratching around the edge of the parking lot. Thought to be an escapee from
the neighboring Frog Pond Learning Center, if he isn't retrieved soon, he is
sure to become fox food.
