As I've mentioned before on this listserve, it's always a treat to find any
shorebird in Frederick Co. There are just no good places and only a few odd
spots where they might occur. Greenspring Pond is one of those.
Originally a mill-dam pond, the property was recently purchased with the intent
(so we were told) of dredging and restoring it to be a deep-water pond.
Fortunately for us selfish birders, the dredging has not begun. Today, it is a
wonderful mudflat, with the small stream flowing through, and has attracted a
fair number of hard-to-find birds for this part of the Valley:
Killdeer - 2 adults + 2 YOUNG
L. Yellowlegs - 2
Solitary SP - 24 (I may have undercounted by a few)
Spotted SP - 2
PECTORAL SP - 2 (our 1st for this Co.)
