I know, we're crazy for birdwatching in this heat but once you're wet with
perspiration, you might as well keep going! Plus an iced coffee from WaWa was a
big help…
After Dutch Gap, we detoured over to Crewe's Channel, on Route 156 on the edge
of the Malvern Hill section of the Richmond Battlefield National Park. (right
turn off Route 5 as you head west, past Shirley Plantation). Arrived there
about 11:20 am.
There was shallow water in the swamp. With my spotting scope I found 6 immature
White Ibis feeding on the far side near a Great Egret. Also two Lesser
Yellowlegs on the opposite side with several Killdeer.
Very productive for a short visit -- also a Red-headed Woodpecker observed
flying around the dead trees at the back of the swamp.
