Warbler Road is definitely worth the trip but I would advise going with
someone that is familiar with the area. Our bird club (Southside Bird Club)
met Lynchburg Bird Club 5/8/2010. Lots of their members were very
knowledgeable about the area. Canada and Cerulean were in upper elevations
off Sunset Fields overlook. We saw tons of warblers including the
Prothonotary and Worm Eating, Hooded, Black and White, etc, etc!! It is a
warbler haven. From a photography standpoint, some species stay very high
up in the trees so close ups can be a challenge. I remember people from
other states being there when we were .
The following is about the route we took..and I don't remember all the roads
we were on. Most of the roads are not paved. Get a map of the area. I
printed a map online and that helped a lot. After passing the Peaks Lodge
and turning on SR 812 there are no places to get gas, a snack, or
bathrooms. So pack accordingly. Also, it can be quite cold at that high of
an elevation so dress in layers. Since its been five years since I've been,
things may have changed. I've been meaning to go back every year
since....but haven't made it yet!! Good luck and happy birding!!
