Hi VA-Birders,
We had excellent looks today at a male Kentucky Warbler at Woodville Park,
located off Rt 17 in the Hayes/Ordinary area Gloucester County. We have
heard this species in the same location the past 2 years but had not seen
it before.
The bird was singing at the end of the main entrance road. Also seen/heard
in that same area: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Acadian Flycatcher, Ovenbird and
Northern Parula.
In the main parking area (by the port-a-potty), we had great looks at a
1st-year male Summer Tanager, 1st year and adult Orchard Oriole - their
persistent songs made it easy to locate them. A nesting pair of Eastern
Bluebirds harrassed a squirrel that apparently was getting too close to
their nest.
After walking on the path past the soccer fields (at the far end of the
pond) we had Prairie Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, White-eyed Vireo, Indigo
Bunting and Blue Grosbeak.
For a small park, this was a very productive and enjoyable birding
experience!
