I spent much of the day birding around Kerr Dam in Mecklenburg County today.
Highlights were two White-winged Scoters seen from the Corps of Engineers
Visitor Center on route 4 above the dam. A raft of Ruddy Ducks was nearby
with a few Ring-necked Ducks and a Red-breasted Merganser, and Common Loons
and Horned Grebes were scattered around the lake, but bird numbers in
general were modest. I visited Palmer Point twice and saw several Common
Loons and some grebes but not much more; this is not to say that the
Red-throated and Pacific loons are gone, since scoping the lake was made
difficult by wind, but I didn't see them.
Not much at Dick Cross WMA -- a snipe, Savannah Sparrows, and more expected
species. Also people riding horses and hunting dogs having fun. Plenty of
Pine Warblers singing along the side roads in the area.
