Mary Foster, Paul Glass and I enjoyed the nice weather today at Kerr Reservoir
in Mecklenburg Co. We had several new spring arrivals starting with a singing
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER near the marsh on route 1. It was a good swallow day
with 5 species recorded including TREE, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED, BARN, PURPLE
MARTIN and 4 early CLIFF SWALLOWS that were ducking in and out of their
traditional nesting sites on the dam. The last new species we saw today were 2
male BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Clyde's Pond in Dick Cross WMA. On the main lake above
the dam, the hen COMMON GOLDENEYE continues as does 2 GREATER SCAUP. Also there
was an adult RED-THROATED LOON and several HORNED GREBES sporting some snazzy
breeding colors, real lookers! At Tailrace Park below the dam, one of the
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS that's been there all winter was showing today and the adult
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL that's been missing in action for the last month or so
was back hanging out with the Ring-billed Gulls on the rocks, also looking
quite dapper with his clean white head. The OSPREY were hard at work adding
finishing touches to their nest across from the visitor center. Should be more
birds coming. Get out there if you can.
