Observation start time: 07:30:00
Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8.5 hours
Official Counter: Anna Stunkel
Observers: Harry Armistead, Joe Beatty, Katie Garst, Steve Thornhill
Weather:
Moderate to strong, gusty winds were variable, often from the northwest.
Skies were mostly sunny. Temperatures were in the forties and fifties,
cooling as the day progressed.
Raptor Observations:
We had excellent raptor diversity, with a total of 12 species counted.
There was a good red-tail and Bald Eagle flight, and two beautiful juvenile
Golden Eagles passed the platform. It is worth noting that many of today's
raptors were seen traveling northwards (especially buteos), but only
southbound birds are included in the count.
Non-raptor Observations:
Many Turkey Vultures were on the move, with a total of 872 southbound birds
counted. (This is probably an overcount due to the back-and-forth nature of
Turkey Vulture movement on the Eastern Shore.) Northern Gannets were very
active over the bay. Other observations included:
191 Tundra Swans
32 Bonaparte's Gulls
2 Great Egrets
1 Barn Swallow
1 Rusty Blackbird
1 Buckeye
1 Monarch
