Howdy all,
Today was not really the day I was expecting. It was dead from the start
with no new movement of birds. Our first net run had 3 species (a very bad
sign
for the day). As it turned out, we did end up having a few YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER hits later in the morning, but outside of that it was dead. I mean way
dead. We banded 7 birds that we not yellow-rumps. That's pretty sad.
Anyway, guess there is always tomorrow.
But the best bird of the day came when we got word of a SNOW BUNTING on the
fishing pier here at Kiptopeke. Soooo, since it was dead at the banding
station we all went on a little field trip to the pier to check it out. Rumor
has
it that there were two birds, but we only saw one. Beautiful bird! We don't
get to see to many of them down here. Also, at or near the pier, was a young
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, PEREGRINE FALCON, and two distant SCOTERS (either
Black or Surf).
Anyway, here's the short list of the birds banded.
Red-breasted Nuthatch 1
White-throated Sparrow 2
Song Sparrow 2
Eastern Towhee 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler 114 thank God for yellow-rumps
TOTAL--------------------------------- 121
I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope tomorrow is a bit more diverse! Seven
non-yellow-rumps is a bit depressing.
Cheers,
