Howdy all,
As Bob Ake mentioned in his post, the Kiptopeke banding station started the
fall season today. The day started off a little slow but picked up and was
quite good for most of the day. Migrants are definitly starting to move through
the area already. Many of the birds caught today were quite fat. Always a good
sign. By the time we called it a day, we had banded 41 birds, had 3 recaptures
from previous seasons, and two hummingbirds that were not banded. Warblers made
a nice showing for our first day of banding, with the highlight being an
extremely beautiful hatch year male Blue-winged!
It was nice to have the Ake's around today to start off the season! Hopefully
the rain will shut off for a little while, like a few weeks, but as I write,
it's still coming down. Hope it's dry by morning!
Birds banded today:
Warblers:
Prairie 4
A. Redstart 5
Black and white 3
Blue-winged 1
N. Waterthrush 1
Ovenbird 1
Worm-eating 1
Y-B Chat 1
Other birds:
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1
Carolina Chickadee 1
Carolina Wren 5
Grasshopper Sparrow 2
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Orchard Oriole 3
N. Cardinal 7
Hairy Woodpecker 2
N. Mockingbird 2
Ruby-Thr. Hummingbird 2 (unbanded)
The Kiptopeke banding station is open seven days a week, weather permitting. We
start half hour before sunrise and go
roughly 7-8 hours after that. The public is always welcome and encouraged.
Early in the morning is highly recommended if you are planning a visit. Bird
activity is pretty low by noon. Our first net run is usually just after
sunrise. I hope everyone is planning their trip to the shore!
See you there!
