I hiked the seven mile long Lakeshore Trail this afternoon at Holliday Lake
State Park in Appomattox/Buckingham County. There were some great birds on
the lake and in the woods. The park is a great place for birding in both
counties at the same time, since the boundary runs along the center of the
lake; however, it is difficult at times to judge whether a bird has crossed
over the county line.
I first noticed 8 Red-necked Grebes near the dam when I arrived at the
beach area. With the grebes were 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Greater
Scaup, and a LONG-TAILED DUCK. The northern end of the lake revealed 3
Pied-billed Grebes, 2 Ring-necked Ducks, and 23 Canada Geese. Strangely
enough, I heard a Barred Owl and 2 Woodcock calling along the trail near
the observation platform. Other highlights included singing Pine Warblers
and chattering Winter Wrens. Right before I left an Osprey appeared,
carrying a fish over the dam.
