Friends of Huntley Meadows Park is sponsoring a lecture on Wednesday,
September 17. Below is the blurb from the Huntley calendar of events.
Communication towers, wind farms, and transmission and distribution lines in
the Washington, DC area are having a growing impact on migratory birds. Dr.
Albert Manville of the Division of Migratory Bird Management, USFWS, is the
Service's national lead working on human-caused mortality to birds. He'll
discuss
the latest problems, current research, best management practice, and
solutions to these increasing man-made challenges. FREE to FOHMP members and
Huntley
Meadows' volunteers. Reservations required. $3
I work with Al at the Department of the Interior on some of these issues, and
he is _the_ expert. As some of you may know, there are big wind farm
projects being planned for all over the east coast, including ridges in West
Virginia, Chesapeake Bay, and off Cape Cod. Telecommunications towers continue
to
proliferate, including huge new towers for HDTV. I encourage everyone to
attend,
not only because this is interesting and important stuff, but also because I
would like to have a good turn-out for Al. Call the Park at 703-768-2525.
Thanks.
Ben Jesup
