VA Birders,
A nice day to be out this morning at Leesylvania State Park (Prince William
Co.). A total of 12 warbler species were seen from 8:15 until 1:00 -- the last
hour was spent at Julie Metz wetlands on the way out. Numbers are estimated as
I didn't take proper notes and some flocks were moving quickly, but here is an
idea of the action:
Northern Parula (7-8)
Chestnut-sided (3)
Magnolia (20-25; Maggies were everywhere today! One flock contained at least 6
individuals)
Black-throated Blue (8)
Black-throated Green (10)
Pine (2 near in the pines on Brushy Point)
Blackpoll (2)
Yellow-throated Warbler (1 providing excellent views from the pines near the
boat launch on Brushy Point)
Black-and-white (6-7)
American Redstart (4)
Ovenbird (2)
Common Yellowthroat (3 at Metz)
Other species of interest included:
Bald Eagle (3 Adults)
Forester's Tern (3)
Barred Owl (calling)
Blue-headed Vireo (1 seen near the Lee House ruins. My fav of the day along
with YT warb)
Northern Rough-winged Swallow (many feeding over the river in the morning)
Rudy-crowned Kinglet (4)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (1)
Scarlet Tanager (2)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1)
