The aforementioned sparrow was the best bird off the Hike/Bike Trail this
morning. It was in the field to the left of the platform. For those
interested in butterflies, the number of buckeyes at Huntley (and elsewhere)
over the last couple of weeks has been tremendous. I've seen hundreds of
these beauties.

Philip Kline was in town for a conference last week, and I played hookie on
Friday morning to go birding with him. We first went to Leesylvania, where
the highlights were a WOODCOCK in the woods at Brushey Point (it's walking
rustled leaves about 8 feet from us while we were looking at butterflies),
and an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at the gun emplacement. We also
saw the biggest flock of RED-EYED VIREOS I've ever seen, a good dozen birds
in one foraging flock.
