Yesterday the Eastern Phoebes were much in evidence around Long Branch Nature
Center in Arlington. In the evening a Winter Wren turned up very near the
building, and several minutes later a Hermit Thrush by the amphitheater. Later
yet, in my back yard in Glencarlyn, I was pleased to hear and then see another
Phoebe hanging out. At one point, it made a flycatching move right up to a wood
block with holes drilled for native bees. I had seen much bee activity there
earlier. I think it nailed one of my bees! As an aside, this time of year, it
is fascinating to observe all the activity around Alonso's native bee operation
by the "rainbow shed" at Long Branch. Native bees (not the introduced Honeybee)
are amazingly diverse and interesting little critters, and crucial pollinators.
Plus bird food! Cheers,
