Our numbers of banded Northern Saw-whet Owls picked up this week as expected,
after two initial birds on 10/21 and 10/28. Beginning Monday 10/29 we netted
six saw-whets, followed by four, two, and zero as the weather turned warmer
with winds from a southerly direction. Last night after the cold front passed
we were back up to ten, with the last two at a midnight check as we stayed open
an extra hour. This puts us at 24 birds, a record pace for us in this invasion
year. In our best year of 2004 when we netted 52 saw-whets we had nine birds
by this time.
