Like a number of other northern species, Northern Saw-whet Owls seem to be
headed south in big numbers and earlier than usual. The last two nights
we banded 37 and 40 owls respectively and recaptured 4 owls banded at
other stations. After one week of banding here in western Rockingham
County we have banded almost 150 owls. This is generally the number we
band during the whole season, viz. the month of November. We have been
banding at this station since 2001 and this will undoubtedly be the
biggest flight that we have seen.
