I did a little scouting around Mason Neck today in preparation for this
Sunday's Ft. Belvoir Christmas Bird Count. Hunting was going on the west
side of Belmont Bay and most waterfowl were concentrated on the east from
the state park visitor's center to Kane's Creek. The number of Gadwall was
impressive with an estimated 800 birds. I accessed the Great Marsh from
the Great Marsh Trail off Gunston Road. As soon as I got out of the car, I
encountered a vocal Red-headed Woodpecker. I finally found the bird on the
opposite side of Gunston Road from the parking lot. Although it was low
tide in the marsh, I could only find one of the Greater Yellowlegs reported
earlier.
A trip up the George Washington Parkway to Hunting Creek quickly yielded the
Cackling Goose on the river side while another birder found the Greater
White-fronted Goose on the west side of the bridge. David Ledwith scanned
the flats and found 2 of the 3 Dunlin that have been hanging out with
Killdeer.
The day ended with a stop at Gravelly Point to watch the Snowy Owl. It did
not disappoint. It first appeared on the windsock and then flew to the
ground and ended up perched on a telephone pole.
