There were several interesting birds seen at Meadowood today during the Big Sit
which was sponsored by the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia. This leisurely
count, which is sort of like a birding tailgate party, was conducted at the
pollinator garden near the Mustang Trailhead. I am not sure of the final tally,
but we counted somewhere around 45 bird species. A few notable birds included
American Kestrels, Eastern Meadowlarks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Bald Eagles, a
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and a flock of Northern Pintails. Warblers included
Pine, Palm and Magnolia. At one point, I walked down Harley Road and found two
Red-breasted Nuthatches in some Pine trees, but we could not include them in
the count since they were not seen or heard from the count circle.
