The dreary weather and snow helped produce some interesting birds today at Blandy Experimental Farm (Clarke County). At about 4 pm I saw two Merlins hunting from trees on Berry's Ferry Road along Blandy's south border. I have a passable photo of one:

There also was a pair of Canvasback (male and female) on Lake Arnold in the Arboretum. A Wilson's Snipe, about 6 Rusty Blackbirds, and a bunch of robins and red-wings were working the shore of the lake. Along the gravel roads I saw about 10 Savannah Sparrows among the Songs, White-throats, and Juncos. A small flock of 6 American Pipits were hanging out on the paved entrance road.
