VA-Birders,
Perri Borowiecki and I spent a few hours at Monticello Park off Beverly
Drive in Alexandria on Wednesday. I haven't seen many reports from this
location on VA-Birds, so I figured I would send a report of birds we saw
today.
We arrived around ten AM, and found the park quite quiet. We made a few
laps around the various trails, and weren't coming up with much. We did
find a Gray-cheeked Thrush on the south/east side of the stream, up along the
top of the hill, fairly close to the entrance of the park. We had long
looks at this bird, and it was cold gray on the head, back, and wings, lacking
any of the warmer, buffier tones we'd seen on a couple Swainson's Thrushes
earlier. I've had good luck with this species at this park over the years,
though admittedly I haven't been to Monticello in more than a few. We
also had a singing Veery.
Around noon birds became more active, both coming down to the stream and
singing. The eleven-warbler roster included a silent Ovenbird, a silent
Northern Waterthrush, singing Black-and-white, singing and seen male Common
Yellowthroat, a singing Redstart near the entrance, a singing and seen Cape
May, a singing Parula as well as a female spending some time bathing, at
least two Blackpolls singing and seen, three singing Black-throated Blues and
probably two females, a singing Black-throated Green, and a lovely Canada
that was obliging in the trees and later took a bath. I heard the word
Magolia being yelled a couple times, so presumably there was one there as
well.
