The flooded ¾ mile long corn field at Hardware River Wildlife Management Area
appears to be an ideal refueling spot for Solitary Sandpipers.
I went back Sunday afternoon hoping to see more and I was not disappointed!
There were two I managed to photograph in the corn field as they fed on a
banquet of tadpoles and other invertebrates. At first it was difficult to spot
them because of the watercress plants. They could not be seen from the path
that runs east to west along the outer edge of the corn field, but were seen
as I exited the woods from the north side between the two rivers, the James and
Hardware.
There was a chorus of song birds there and I managed to get a few more photos
of them.
I have never seen any other photographers or birders there, perhaps because
this is a Fee Use Area. But the place was busting with birds on Sunday.
