Subject: [Va-bird] No Va. Mississippi Kites: DIRECTIONS
The note below is posted from Bob Augustine. I was over at the several of
the locations Bob mentions this morning and saw some kites.
I had my best luck on Southhampton, just ( right) off of Braddock at the
first intersection, and at the intersection of Braddock and Rolling
Rd.(where I spotted a flying and a perched kite.
HERE'S BOB'S MESSAGE:
Your best bet now is the Canterbury Woods Swim and Tennis Club. This
location, 3 miles from the beltway, is only a quarter mile from the old
King's Park area. The 3 birds seen here Aug 1 and Aug 5 at various times of
day include 2 adults and 1 probable sub-adult. Take a right (N) off
Braddock Road on Stone Haven to its end at English Drive, then right to the
end. Access unused tennis courts behind the pool from here for best viewing.
(Kites here range primarily between Braddock and Braeburn and Wakefield
Chapel and Stone Haven.)
Second chance is the vicinity of Rolling and Braddock Roads, a half mile
further down Braddock. Nearby roads such as Orange Hunt Lane and King David
Blvd. may provide views. A pair was seen Aug 5 at 6:25 pm, one perched over
9017 Orange Hunt Lane, the other circling over Rolling and Braddock.
Third chance is 3 miles further down Burke Lake Road near Burke Centre
Parkway at the south end of Wilmington Drive, (#6325 and 6328), another cul
de sac, south of Burke Lake Road near Timmaron Cove Lane. The pair seen
perched there 5:30 August 5th may be the birds seen repeatedly earlier this
week over nearby Burke Pond and last summer behind the Heatherwood
Retirement Center. One bird called briefly.
These latter two locations may represent evening roosts, but birds have been
seen at both at other times. Be advised that kites often take a mid-day
break and perch for an hour or so. Some sun is better than none.
Three kites, one calling, were reported Sunday afternoon, July 31 from the
Pohick Regional Library at Sydenstricker Road and Old Keene Mill Road, but
subsequent searches of the area turned up nothing.
Sorry, no nests have been found.
