A total of 20 people participated in today's Northern Va. Bird Club Walk held
in Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Cty., and led by Larry Meade & myself. Top
bird honors went to a very cooperative Olive-sided Flycatcher. According to
the Sibley field guide, this species "[a]lways chooses the most conspicuous
perch available" and this one must have read the book, as he afforded
walk-away scope-filling views for all as he perched high on dead snags at the
beginning of the boardwalk, while doing his flycatching thing. This bird was
a lifer for several people in the group. The American Bittern was a bit shyer,
but he finally emerged from the reeds to let everyone see him. The complete
list of 63 species is attached. The Wood Duck & Hooded Merganser listings
includes families of young ducklings. (Other birders told us that they saw a
Wilson's Warbler, but we did not see it.)
