12th NASSAWADOX CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2017.
Includes Willis Wharf, Hog Island, Red Bank, Machipongo (Box Tree), two
nurseries, Exmore, Hare Valley, Webbs Island, Brickhouse Neck, Franktown,
Upshur Neck, Bell Neck, The Nature Conservancy (Brownsville), the north end of
Cobb Island, and other obscure entities.
One of the more underbirded sections of the Eastern Shore, Terra Incognita.
About half is open bay, remote saltmarsh, and ocean. Most areas already have a
(very) few committed participants. There is always room for more, especially
on the boat.
HEADQUARTERS: Quality Inn & Suites on the N side of Exmore, east side of Route
13, 2543 Lankford Highway, VA 23350, 757.442.7378, where some of us (I for one)
will be lodging. COMPILATION will be from 5:15-7 P.M. in the continental
breakfast alcove there (on the right as one enters, trembling from the cold,
1st floor).
There are numerous restaurants to hit afterwards, including the charming Exmore
Diner and El Maguey. Alas, Sage Diner burned a few years ago. Sic transit
gloria mundi. I shall miss their soggy rice pilaf.
Quality Inn has a fine continental breakfast (not an oxymoron), usually with
bacon, eggs, hot cereal, hardboiled eggs, waffles, et alii, not just cold
cereal that looks like cardboard. Starts at 6 A.M.
Let me know if interested. I’ll be participating, Sat., Dec. 16, on the
Wachapreague C.B.C., just north of Nassawadox. Their compilation is at the
Sage Diner in Onley starting at 4:30, rice pilaf notwithstanding. Harry
Armistead, Philadelphia.
