ID Challenge #9 generated 11 responses with Ashley, Shea, David S.,
David B., Teresa, Phil, and John guessing the Wild Turkey which is a
common breeding species here in Nelson County and a female of which
flushed from the nest as I was walking along an abandoned railroad grade
near Elma. Other answers were Mallard, Wood Duck, Canada Goose, and quail.
Now to ID Challenge #10, my last in the series: this Empidonax
flycatcher is most frequently identified by its emphatic one or two part
vocalization variously described as tee-chup, peet-sah, or flee-sick.
Less well known is another vocalization consisting of a a series of soft
twittered notes. It has been compared to the sound made by at least two
other species. Name the species and those to which its soft song has
been compared.
Thanks to all of you for participating in the challenges; I've enjoyed
it and know many of the challenges haven't been easy.
